An advanced-level class focusing on forward bends in which we will explore our potential for growth by paying attention to our limitations.

In Iyengar yoga, forward bends hold a special place as transformative postures. Through the conscious extension of the spine and surrendering into the fold, we learn to release tension and unravel deep-seated emotions. These poses invite us to explore the delicate balance between surrender and strength, forging and fostering a connection with our inner selves.

Guruji emphasized the importance of continuous self-observation in enhancing our awareness and facilitating the practice. Through this introspective process, we can unlock new realms of possibility and make actions that once seemed impossible feel effortless and natural.

Each day and each new session presents us with an opportunity to discover something new about ourselves and how we relate to our bodies and yoga practice. Yoga teaches us to confront reality head-on and acknowledge what lies before us. It encourages us to be genuine and honest with ourselves. Are our muscles too tense? Is our body aligned and balanced? Learning to be honest in this way is one of the first challenges we are faced with on our yoga journey.

Every aspect of yoga, every technique and pose, serves a purpose. Each movement and posture allows us to delve further into our understanding of the body’s intricate mechanisms. Even seemingly gentle and restorative transitional poses like Parvatasana in Virasana or Virasana Forward offer profound insights into the workings of other postures. Moreover, they create the space necessary for us to reflect on our practice and progress before moving forward.

In this class, by combining the practice of self-observation with the exploration of forward bends, we cultivate a deep sense of mindfulness and embodiment. We learn to listen to our bodies, respect their limitations, and recognize their potential for growth. As we gain this understanding, we learn how to apply it to aspects of our lives and our practice that didn’t seem related to the lessons we thought we were learning.
