What is Dvi Pada Viparita Dandasana (Dropping back to Bench)
This is the first stage of supported Dvi Pada Viparita Dandasana, using the chair. The chair provides a frame to allow the body to gradually curl back, without dropping the hips or buttocks. With support, the action of the thighs and legs can be developed, while the chair assists in working into the dorsal spine and shoulder blades.
When to use Dvi Pada Viparita Dandasana (Dropping back to Bench)
This supported version of the pose may be used during a backbend class as a first stage in coming fully into Dvi Pada Viparita Dandasana. With the feet to the wall, and head support it can also be done during the menstrual cycle. Because of the good chest opening this pose brings, and because it is well supported, it may be incorporated into a miscellaneous sequence focusing on chest opening and shoulder work.
