When it comes to yoga, many forms and niches have cultivated followings around the globe. While all have their own unique advantages, Iyengar remains one of the most popular styles utilised by yoga communities worldwide.

The history of Iyengar yoga

Iyengar yoga was created in 1936 by yoga practitioner Yogacharya B.K.S. Iyengar, who aimed to create a style of yoga that focused on the physical alignment of the body where poses are concerned. A form of hatha yoga, the practice also championed the use of props in order to ensure a better accuracy of poses and creating a means for beginners to truly experience the full benefits of practicing yoga.

While Iyengar yoga has since risen to prominence, we know that taking the first step towards trying yoga can be extremely daunting. However, we’re here to assure beginners that there’s less to fear and plenty to gain by simply taking the first steps.

Here’s how you can practise Iyengar yoga from your own home.

Get in touch with a specialist

While it may be harder to physically visit a local yoga studio due to COVID-19 regulations, you can still get in touch with a specialist or teacher online. This is a great opportunity for you to not only find out more about Iyengar yoga but also seek answers to any questions you may have about your particular goals or concerns before stepping foot into a yoga studio.

Practice regularly on your own

Once you’ve spoken to a practitioner and can get your hands on some instructional materials (such as online videos or online coaching), a great means of improving your Iyengar poses is by putting them to practice regularly. This may include daily practice per week or even multiple sessions per day. Depending on your capacity, it’s important to make sure you’re putting what you’ve learned into practice in order to improve.

Seek training in order to improve

Once you’ve begun your journey of practicing Iyengar yoga regularly, you’ll be able to perfect the poses by seeking direction from a certified practitioner who can assess your skills and direct you more effectively. The whole purpose that began this particular stream was to pursue accuracy through progress in order to fully experience the benefits of each pose. What better way to achieve this than by getting the expert assistance you need to make it achievable?
