At Yoga Vastu, our goal is to make world-class instruction in Iyengar yoga available to our students wherever they are, whenever they want to practice. We make our classes available online through an on-demand platform – one that ensures that you can watch and rewatch specific flows and classes, and take your learning into your own hands.
The on-demand aspect of our service is a considered choice on our part – but we’ve had some customers ask us about live streaming. In this article, we want to talk about why we provide our content in an on-demand format, and how that differs from a live streaming service.
What’s the difference between on-demand and live streaming?
On-demand and live streaming are two different ways to handle online content. The easiest way to draw out the difference here might be to use popular platforms that are examples of each. You see, the way we do things, on-demand, is similar to watching your favourite shows on Netflix. The content is pre-recorded, and available to you when you want it.
Live streaming is much closer to the experience you might have while in a Zoom meeting. Content is captured live and broadcasted out to an audience viewing at the same time as the class is being shown. Some might say that this way of doing things would more closely resemble a class environment, but we feel that there are distinct benefits to the way we’ve done things that outstrip live streaming.
Why we provide our yoga instruction on-demand
The live streaming element is an exciting proposition. But we feel that for the study of Iyengar yoga, the on-demand way of handling our classes is much better suited. We say this because Iyengar yoga is a practice characterised by intricacy and a great commitment to detail – and it is hugely beneficial to have the choice to review where needed.
On-demand learning offers the student the opportunity to review details and pace their own progress. Similarly, it provides us as educators in the practice the opportunity to present a carefully structured expression of a flow that is closer to ideal than you would find in each live class. Combined with accessibility at the times that best suit you, this makes our platform a powerful learning tool.
Where we have incorporated the live element
The benefits of an on-demand structure aside, there is something special about having that live-element in a yoga class. This is why we have made the step into recording some of our live classes. These recordings are not live streams per se, but they provide something of that in-person experience – without the requirement of matching those times to your schedule.
For those who are looking to stop in at in-person yoga studios whenever they have the opportunity, we have brought together a list of Iyengar studios that share in our commitment to quality instruction in the practice of Iyengar yoga.
