Utthita Trikonasana
(Extended Triangle Pose)

How to perform Extended Triangle Pose

Keep the toes and kneecap of your left leg pointed forward and, keeping your spine straight and long, stretch over your leg. Place your left hand on your ankle or on a block next to your foot. Look up towards your extended right arm.

What is Utthita Trikonasana?

Triangle pose. One of the most essential and iconic standing postures. This pose cultivates flexibility, strength, and steadiness in the legs, arms, and spine. In Trikonasana, the arms and legs are extended and dynamic, and the spine lengthens. The chest and torso rotate away from the floor, resisting the effects of gravity on the body.

When to use Utthita Trikonasana?

This pose can be included in a wide variety of sequences. It is learned early on in the practice of yoga and continues to be valuable throughout the practitioner’s life. Use Triangle pose early in a sequence to warm the muscles and condition the body for later poses. As you become more experienced, different actions in Trikonasana can be emphasised, depending on what poses will follow, later in the sequence.

This pose is a great “all-rounder” for virtually any practice.
